The RD reissue guitar also sports 2 Dirty Fingers humbucker pickups. These Gibson pickups are extreme-output units designed for more of everything. Parallel wiring is similar to splitting, but it's still humbucking and a little more hollow-sounding; Paul Gilbert used to use two Super Distortions wired in parallel when he was in Racer X.

Dimarzio X2N
The X2N is a "take-no-prisoners, in-your-face" humbucker. Twin, wide-bar pole pieces give the X2N a nasty, dangerous look-and rightly so. Our highest gain pickup was created to push tube amps into total overdrive. Put one in the bridge position for a powerful jolt to the voltage the amp sees from your guitar. The result is a sound that can only be described as blistering. The magnetic field of the X2N is very powerful and focused. It captures the character of whichever guitar it's in. If your guitar is warm sounding, the X2N will act like a sledgehammer. A bright-sounding guitar will go into total scream mode. Beveled Top

Neck-Through Construction
B.C. Rich is known as one of the pioneers in neck through construction. They use it on many of their guitars, because it provides the best possible sustain, resonance, comfort and access to higher frets. Neck-through has long been considered the premium construction method for high-end guitars. This construction starts with a long piece (or pieces) of premium North American maple. That piece runs from the tip of the headstock to the strap button on the opposite end of the guitar. This means that the headstock, fingerboard, pickups and bridge all are mounted to this single sound foundation. Sonically it is a difference you can hear. The neck-through construction also allows more of the body and neck to be cut away at the neck joint, which provides comfort no bolt-on or set-neck could offer. EMG-81 (bridge position)
The EMG-81 is a high output pickup designed especially for the lead guitarist. The 81 is at its best for high volume overdrive and amps with a master volume. EMG-85 (neck position)
Although the EMG-85 has more measurable output than the 81, its frequency response and string interface are different. The 85 uses two Alnico magnet loaded coils with a wide aperture to maintain a beefy low end and a fatter top end. Because of a more natural tone, it works great as a rhythm and blues pickup because it has loads of output but isn't muddy.

Flat Top
Some of the B.C Rich shapes are offered with a flat top. The flat top styling gives a bold and pristine look to the edge of the instrument's shape. Usually when the flat top feature is used, B.C. Rich adds a stripe of single or multi-ply binding around the edge in a complementary color. The binding on a flat top finishes off the edge cleanly and gives a sleek and clean look to the guitar.

Gibson USA turns the guitar world upside down again by introducing the limited edition Reverse Explorer.

The limited edition Reverse Explorer Gibson USA's Guitar of the Month for September 2008 is a guitar ready for the 21st century. Last year's Reverse Flying V triggered an unprecedented response from both players and collectors. Once again, the engineers at Gibson USA have flipped the body of one of their most iconic guitars, and the result is stunning.

The Reverse Explorer's one-piece mahogany body is now inverted so that the small horn is on the upper bass-side bout extending upward, while the larger horn is now positioned on the lower treble-side bout, pointing downward. Highlighting the unique body outline is a carbon fiber pickguard shaped like a lightning bolt, extending the entire length of the body. The neck is a hybrid between Gibson's standard '50s rounded contour and its '60s slim-taper profile, topped by a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with carbon fiber inlays at the fifth and 12th fret.

The world wasn't quite ready for the Gibson Explorer in 1958, as evidenced by production numbers that strained to meet 100 units. Now 50 years later those same models are some of the most prized collectible guitars in the world, and Gibson USA honors the legacy of this legendary electric guitar by introducing the 50-Year Commemorative Gibson Explorer.

The retro-style, solid mahogany body of this Guitar of the Month for October 2008 is as angular and asymmetrical today as it was the first day it left Gibson's Kalamazoo plant in 1958. Added, however, is a AA figured maple top with beveled edges, and a hotter-than-hell Brimstone Burst finish all exclusive features of this limited edition Explorer guitar. The Gibson Logo

Angled Headstock
The angled headstock is another example of Gibson s industry-changing way of thinking. Every Gibson headstock is carved out of the same piece of mahogany as the neck. It is not a glued-on headstock, and the process takes craftsmanship, time, and effort. But the rewards are worth the effort. The headstock is carefully angled at 17 degrees, which increases pressure on the strings and helps them stay in the nut slots. An increase in string pressure also means there is no loss of string vibration between the nut and the tuners, which equals better sustain.

Adjustable Truss Rod
The adjustable truss rod is a Gibson innovation that revolutionized the guitar. Before this groundbreaking discovery in the early 1930s, the truss rod was used only to strengthen and stabilize the neck. By making it adjustable, the truss rod now allows a guitar to be set up using a variety of string gauges, as well as string heights. This easily accommodates any style of playing, and allows a limitless range of set-up options. And by placing it at the base of the headstock, the adjustable nut is easily accessible, even while the strings are still on the guitar.

50s Rounded Neck Profile
No guitar neck profiles are more distinguishable than the neck profiles employed on the Gibson models of today. The more traditional 50s neck profile found on the SG Diablo is the thicker, rounder, more time-honored profile, emulating the neck shapes of the iconic late 50s Gibson models. The neck is machined in Gibson s rough mill using wood shapers to make the initial cuts. But once the fingerboard gets glued on, the rest including the final sanding is done by hand. That means there are no two necks with the exact same dimensions. So while it still has the basic characteristics of its respective profile, each neck will be slightly different, with a distinct but traditional feel.

24-Fret Rosewood Fingerboard
Rosewood has always graced the fingerboards of the world s finest stringed instruments, including many of today s Gibsons. The fingerboards on Gibson SG Diablos are constructed from the highest-grade rosewood on the planet, but there s one key difference the Diablo takes the SG s 24-3/4-inch scale length neck and adds two additional frets. That s a total of 24 frets, which allows an even higher register of notes from a guitar already known for its searing lead-playing capacity. The rosewood is personally inspected and qualified by Gibson s team of skilled wood experts before it enters the factories to be fitted onto the neck of the SG Diablo. Nickel and Silver Alloy Fret Wire
The fret wire on the Gibson models is a combination nickel and silver alloy (approximately 80 percent nickel and 20 percent silver) specifically designed for long life and superior wear. Gibson s traditional medium/jumbo" fret wire is first shaped by hand, then cut to an exact 12-inch radius. After hand pressing it into the fingerboard, a machine press finishes the job to eliminate the gap between the bottom of the fret wire and the fingerboard.

Trapezoid Inlays
The classic trapezoid inlay is one of the most distinguishable features of many traditional Gibson models, including the SG Diablo. A figured, swirl acrylic gives these inlays that classic pearl look. They are inserted into the fingerboard using a process that eliminates gaps and doesn t require the use of fillers.

Set-Neck Construction Like all classic Gibson guitars, the necks on Les Pauls and SGs are distinguished by one of the more traditional features that have always set them apart a glued neck joint. Gluing the neck to the body of the guitar insures a wood-to-wood contact, no air space in the neck cavity, and maximum contact between the neck and body, allowing the neck and body to function as a single unit. The result? Better tone, better sustain, and no loose or misaligned necks.

Solid Mahogany Body
Probably the most central of all SG features is its solid mahogany body. The mahogany goes through the same rigorous selection process as all of Gibson s woods, and is personally inspected and qualified by Gibson s team of skilled wood experts before it enters the factories. Inside the Gibson factories, humidity is maintained at 45 percent, and the temperature at 70 degrees. This insures all woods are dried to a level of equilibrium, where the moisture content does not change during the manufacturing process. This guarantees tight-fitting joints and no expansion, and controls the shrinkage and warping of the woods, in addition to reducing the weight, it also improves the woods machinability and finishing properties. Consistent moisture content means that the SG Diablo will respond evenly to temperature and humidity changes long after it leaves the factory.

Gibson s Original Burstbucker Pickups
Gibson s drive to recapture the magic of the original Patent Applied For" humbucker pickups of the 1950s culminated with the introduction of the original Burstbucker line in the early 1990s. Using the windings on the 57 Classic pickups as a median, Gibson engineers successfully captured the subtle variations of true, classic Gibson humbucker tone with historically unmatched bobbin windings, unpolished Alnico II magnets, and non-potted asymmetrical coils. The Diablo s Burstbucker 1 (neck position) has two slightly underwound coils, and the Burstbucker 2 (bridge position) has one underwound and one overwound coil. Together, they supply a more open sound and slightly higher output, which allows preamps to be driven a little harder to achieve a more natural break-up. As with all Gibson pickups, every part is precisely manufactured at Gibson USA in Nashville, Tennessee, insuring tight, seamless fittings, and superior workmanship.

Tune-O-Matic Bridge
The Tune-o-matic bridge, also known as the ABR-1, was the brainchild of legendary Gibson president Ted McCarty in 1954. At the time, it was a true revelation in intonation, and set a standard for simplicity and functionality that has never been bettered. This pioneering piece of hardware provides a firm seating for the strings, allowing the player to adjust and fine-tune the intonation and string height in a matter of minutes. It also yields a great union between the strings and body, which results in excellent tone and sustain. It is combined with a separate stopbar tailpiece, essentially a modified version of the earlier wraparound bridge. To this day, the Tune-o-matic remains the industry standard. It is the epitome of form and function in electric guitar bridge design, and is one of the most revered and copied pieces of guitar hardware ever developed.

Nitrocellulose Finish
Applying a nitrocellulose finish to any Gibson guitar including the Gibson SG Diablo is one of the most labor-intensive elements of the guitar-making process. A properly applied nitro finish requires extensive man hours, several evenly applied coats, and an exorbitant amount of drying time. But this fact has never swayed Gibson into changing this time-tested method, employed ever since the first guitar was swathed with lacquer back in 1894. Why? For starters, a nitro finish dries to a much thinner coat than a polyurethane finish, which means there is less interference with the natural vibration of the instrument, allowing for a purer tone. A nitro finish is also a softer finish, which makes it easily repairable. You can touch up a scratch or ding on a nitro finish, but you can t do the same on a poly finish. In addition, a nitro finish is very porous in nature, and actually gets thinner over time. It does not seal wood in an airtight shell as a poly finish does and allows the wood to breathe and age properly.

A Little SG History
In 1961, the Les Paul was redesigned with a thinner body and two sharp cutaway horns that making the upper frets more accessible while lowering production costs. The new guitar was popular, but Les Paul the guitarist did not like it and asked to have his name removed. Gibson renamed the model the "SG" which was short for "solid guitar". Though Les Paul's name was officially removed from the model in 1961, the plastic Les Paul nameplates (positioned between the rhythm pickup and fingerboard) were in abundance in the Gibson factory and SG models having these nameplates were built and sold by Gibson up to end of 1963. SGs have been the choice of world-class artists such as Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, and Angus Young.

The radical design elements of the DiPinto Galaxie 4 may require a certain sartorial confidence on stage, but much of the guitar's strength is functional. The Galaxie 4's matching tortoise pickguard and headstock ensemble, star inlays, and four (count 'em, four) pickups scream fun. But the angled headstock combines cool surf looks with the ability to maintain tension across the 42mm nut without the use of string trees. This is especially functional on the Galaxie 4, where it helps the tremolo stay in tune.

This lightweight poplar guitar also balances extremely well, with the neck hanging at a very comfortable angle when you're strapped in. The maple, 4-bolt neck is attached to the headstock with a luthiers' joint. The Galaxie 4's Jaguar style tremolo maintains the guitars tuning, bending one string doesn't throw the others out of tune, and the guitar sustains well. The Galaxie 4 has a 25-1/2" scale length and a club-like shape to the neck.

If three pickups are good, four must be better! At first it might seem that the DiPinto dudes decided to go a little nuts with the wiring set up, but, like its looks, the wiring of the Galaxie 4 is as functional as it is freaky. The 5-way switch offers bridge pickup alone, bridge and two adjacent pickups, middle two, all four (yahoo!), or neck pickup alone. Positions 3 and 4 are hum-canceling combinations of the single coils.

These DiPinto designed pickups have plenty of punch. The bridge pickup provides a nice twang but also has enough midrange to sound good distorted. Position 2 offers a fine funk tone, and the neck pickup by itself gives enough warmth for jazz combined with plenty of bite for blues. The middle two together make a unique sound that may someday be known as DiPinto Tone, like a single-coil neck/middle combo but with more mids.

The DiPinto's strength lies in their style; visually and sonically. Take one of these on stage and the audience will be talking about it for weeks. Designed in cooperation with the Strummer estate, the Joe Strummer electric guitar has a highly distressed road-worn treatment that duplicates the original's worn-to-the-wood layers of gray auto primer and flat black spray paint. It also features a Revolution Rock engraved neckplate and a limited edition art customization kit that includes Strummer-inspired stencils, stickers and graphics by designer Shepard Fairey.

Strummer was, of course, the Clash's articulate and fiery co-founder, lyricist, rhythm guitarist and lead singer; he later founded, recorded and toured with the Mescaleros. All his life, he vigorously championed individuality, self-expression and change tenets often reflected in the constantly altered look of his favorite instrument his Telecaster (currently on display in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland), an otherwise standard '60s-era model with all the original parts and specifications.

When Strummer bought it in 1975 for £120, the guitar had a Three-color Sunburst finish. He was having none of that, of course, but his improvised DIY gray and black finishes deteriorated quickly, giving the Telecaster its distinctive look. Like Strummer's music, the battered electric guitar changed constantly plastered as it was with stencils, stickers and new paint jobs through the many stages of Strummer's life and career.

To celebrate Strummer's fierce sense of individuality, Fender and acclaimed artist Shepard Fairey collaborated on the new guitar's limited edition Joe Strummer Telecaster customization kit, which includes stencils and stickers inspired by the custom designs Strummer decorated many of his instruments with. The kit comes in a classic 12 album cover featuring graphics by Fairey and photography by Bob Gruen and will accompany the first 1,500 guitars.

The legacy of Joe Strummer (1952-2002) continues to live on, grow louder and shake up the establishment with the release of the Joe Strummer Telecaster, modeled after the beat up and battle-hardened '66 Tele® he wielded as leader of the only band that matters seminal Brit punk commando unit the Clash.

Fender couldn't be more proud and excited to unveil a very special 250-instrument Limited Edition run of the Fender Custom Shop Andy Summers Tribute Telecaster. It's a note-perfect replica of the 1961 Tele® that Summers used to help propel the Police to untold heights of worldwide pop superstardom.

Featuring the ferocious humbucking neck pickup and single coil bridge pickup mounted in the body rather than in the broken brass (not chrome) bridge plate, a control plate-mounted mini-toggle phase switch, body-mounted preamp on/off mini-toggle switch (the Custom Shop has recreated the Police-era preamp), the rear-mounted overdrive unit controlled by a third knob below the two traditional Telecaster volume and tone controls, "soft" brass bridge pieces and Schaller® tuners.

The prototype, built by Fender Custom Shop Master Builder Dennis Galuszka over the course of a year, is currently in use with Andy now. The guitar features the same "eccentric" modifications that the original had when Summers first bought it, most of which were unchanged throughout the nonstop work and excitement of the Police years.

Summers played number one of the 250 replicas when the Police once again electrified the music world by reuniting on Feb. 11, 2007, to open the 49th annual Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. Even more exciting, Summers will play the replica during the momentous 2007 30th anniversary worldwide Police reunion tour, one of the most hoped-for and eagerly awaited events in pop music history. Fender VG Strat

Fender's first modeling strat: a Strat that also models Fender sounds. You no longer need to choose between a virtual guitar and a real guitar. The VG Stratocaster is both everything you'd expect from a Fender Strat, and a whole lot more!

Lurking beneath its classic Strat exterior are 37 sounds based on Strat, Tele, humbucker Strat and acoustic, as well as 5 tunings, but the aesthetic and cosmetic of the Strat remains intact. Even better, the VG Stratocaster delivers level, balanced tone and volume across all these remarkable functions, so that you won't need to continually readjust amp settings with each change in guitar sound.

No unique hardware necessary to use the VG Strat guitar: no special 13-pin or USB cables, no power supply or input box. It plugs in and plays like any electric guitar. All you'll notice visually are 2 additional knobs on the VG Strat's pickguard, plus a small LED and an inconspicuous Roland® GK bridge pickup. The 2 additional knobs are a Mode Control knob and a Tuning Function knob.

The Mode Control Knob between a Virtual version of the Ash bodied Strat (for use of the tuning function), a virtual Telecaster, virtual 2-humbucker Strat, and an assortment of 5 acoustics, from Dreadnought to Resonator. The 5-way blade switch switches you between sounds in the modeling modes just like on a regular guitar.

Tune function rotary control lets you choose between Normal regular tuning, Drop D, Open G, DADGAD, Baritone/Low B, and 12 string. The tuning function does not work in Normal mode when circuit is bypassed. Tuning function is also relative if you tune down to E flat, all of these tunings will transpose down a half step. Since guitarists don't have to turn a single tuning key, a major benefit of all these instant tuning changes is that the string tension remains the same and the guitar itself feels the same.

The VG's development followed a commitment to "The Complex Art of Keeping It Simple." Developers spent time and great effort working out intricate details so that you can just plug in and play.
